Ben’s Senior Session | Minneapolis Photographer | Class of 2013

Funny how you can take thousands of pictures and not seem to have taken many of family… funny for me anyways.
Ben here is my nephew and has been all his life. I have watched him grow from a little boy I babysat and teased from time to time into a young man I respect. I sort of look up to him… well I have to, he’s taller than I.
Ben is a senior at Irondale High School. Ben is also goalie for his hockey team and has been for several years. He’s tall for a goalie but he makes it work. His team mates would testify to that.
It was fun to go out and shoot this session with Ben. We actually did not shoot as many pictures as I normally would. Partly because he’s a dude and most dudes aren’t keen on tons of pictures. On the other hand we talked alot. I was very happy with what we came away with and totally enjoyed my time with him. I thought he was going to give me the “I don’t want to do this.” but instead he seemed to be totally into it which helped immensely to make this session rock.

Here is some of my favorites from our time together.
Have a great senior year Ben! I cannot wait to see what you do and where you go.

The Maart Family | Family Portrait Session

Alicia had contacted me about photographing three generations of her family. They have all lived in fairly close proximity but that will be changing in the near future. One family may be moving to Guam no less. Understandably they wanted to get some images with the family all together while they could. We only had an hour to work with and considering that we were pulling eleven people into the shoot and we would be shooting them all together as well as smaller groups it was a bit daunting.. The first hurdle to overcome was the studio space as my studio access had been limited that weekend. Thankfully another St. Paul photographer offered me the use of his space.

I am happy to say that the space, time and family all worked together wonderfully. We got all the shots requested done with some time to squeeze in some others. Thank you Alicia for contacting me. I had a wonderful time with you all and your family was very nice and spot on when it came to getting this all done in an hour.

Here is a good look at the Maarts.

Paul Nye | Musician and Songwriter | Studio Portrait Session

Paul Nye, is a Musician, Singer, Songwriter who resides up in Walker, MN. He is putting together a new CD which will be released this Spring. The more I learn about Paul the more impressed I am. I just noticed on the liner notes of his last CD that he played almost all the instruments. I don’t know about you but that just blows me away. His newest CD, as his previous release, is a collection of songs for children. Parents and children alike will love this music and I encourage you to check it out here. He also has his own website. Paul also puts on some 80 shows during the Summer at the Woodtick Theatre in Akeley, Minnesota. If you get up to that neck of the woods I encourage you to check a show out. Deb and I are planning on it this year.

Paul and I had been in contact for a couple of weeks and he let me know he was headed to the Twin Cities and wanted to connect and get some shots. I was grateful to have the opportunity to work with him. I had a great time getting to know him and look forward to connecting again soon.

Here are some shots from our time together that afternoon.

Professional Portraits | Minneapolis Portrait Photographer

Carolynn contacted me in regards to acquiring some portraiture for both professional and personal use. I appreciated not only being given the opportunity to provide the portraits but also her recognition of the importance of professional portraits in the professional world. I am amazed at the quality of imagery some professionals are using. I personally have a difficult time recognizing someone as a respected professional when they are putting forth a low quality image. I mean we all know about first impressions. When the first impression potential clients have of you, via your website or printed materials, is the photo you are putting out there, it should be aligned with who you are, what you do, and the message/persona you wish to convey. Scanning in your driver’s license image is not going to leave a strong impression… well at least not the kind you wish to leave.

Give some thought to what you have out there… is it current? My first question is one of integrity when someone shows up to a meeting looking 20 years older than the image on their website. People want to trust the image you are putting out there. Is it relevant? Does the image show the confidence, level of approachableness, etc, that you wish to get across?

So, please… give it some thought and make a decison. There are many of us out there willing to help you put forth the image you envision yourself having.

Three Families and a Costanza | Minneapolis Portraits

I have known Reid and Autumn for a handful of years now… actually quite a handful. They are both wonderful people. I have seen them move to marriage and now parenthood with two wonderful children. However I had not ever met anyone else in their family.

Subsequently I was excited when they asked me to shoot their family along with Autumn’s side. But you know you kind of get an idea in your head when you start talking about a session with someone. I can honestly say all ideas went out the window when they got in the studio.

Sometimes a photographer needs to step back and let people be, just be. They all had so much energy, and it was not going to be contained. They were so much fun and so pleasant to be working with that it really turned out to be a session of me just capturing them being their selves.

So with that here are some samples of a wonderful family who one day walked into my studio and just sort of took over the place. (smile)

Colleen & Family | Portraits | Minneapolis Studio

I had the wonderful honor and privilege to photograph Colleen along with her husband Ken and family… including the wonderful grandchildren. My friend Karl whom I have known for five years is Colleen’s Son-In-Law. Through Karl and his wife Erika I was made aware of Colleen’s battle with cancer and the many miracles that have happened in this battle. I had not met Colleen until the day of the shoot but I have held her in prayer for a handful of years so this was a shoot that was near and dear to my heart. I felt so blessed to be asked to do this family session.

Here are some shots of Colleen, her husband Ken, Karl, Erika and the grandkids. A beautiful and wonderful family.

Corporate Portrait and Group Session | Law Firm

I had the pleasure of working with the team from Sapientia Law in the studio a short time ago to provide them with imagery for their website. Part of what this group wanted to convey with their imagery was their individual personalities, as well as, their unique personality as a firm. Their message is one of being a different type of law firm, not holding to the old traditional views. They want to be known as caring, flexible, fun, and diverse amongst other things. So I took that approach to the shots, trying to reveal some of their individuality. I also purposely made these images appear “warm”, as opposed to the “coldness”, which is all too prevalent in corporate portraiture. It was nice to bring this sort of feel to the images knowing how they would be used. I am definitely not the cold and stiff type so working with a group such as this was a genuine pleasure. I sincerely wish them all luck in their new venture.

Mabel At One | Minneapolis Family Portraits

I was so excited to get to spend some time with Mabel again. I first photographed her when she was only five days old. During that session she slept most of the time which did not do a whole lot to prepare me for photographing her now just after she had turned one. Quite a difference. She was very much attracted to the camera and would come crawling at me everytime I started shooting. I had so much fun trying to keep up with her. It was also so very nice to talk and catch-up with Mabel’s Mom and Dad. A very creative couple to be certain with Rebecca’s cooking and David’s web design. I am interested in seeing how Mabel grows and what she does with the incredible life that lays before her. I am blessed to have a window into her life’s journey.

So after our shoot I emailed David and Rebecca a shot to tease them with while they waited for the rest to be processed (I am so mean like that) only to find the next day that they had made a blog post about our shoot the day before. I was very honored by what they wrote.

Thank you David, Rebecca and Mabel. You are a wonderful family and I am so grateful to have been able to take these shots with you all. I sincerely hope we can get together like this for years to come. God bless!

The Johnson Family | Minneapolis Portraits

I have recently gained access to studio space and within a week of signing on I had the Johnson family in for a portrait session. Just in time for the holiday season. I had shot Ashetin’s Senior Session (daughter) in the Fall so I had met most of the family at that time. Such a great family to work with, and so full of life. At seven people they were a bit larger of a group than I was accustomed to for a portrait session but it made it that much more fun. I was happy to hear on their long ride home all the talk was about the session. I am glad they all enjoyed it as much as I did. Thanks Johnson family for a wonderful time together. Next time I will remember to keep the Oreos hidden until we are done. It will make editing a bit easier for me. :-)

The studio is located just outside downtown Minneapolis with easy freeway access and plenty of free parking. It is equipped with all the comforts of home and I am sure you will find it very welcoming. Please contact me via phone or email to book a session indoors during these cold Winter months. I would love to have you out there.

Here are some of my favorite shots of the Johnsons as we “broke-in” the studio.
